Specialized Wireless Management Solutions for Educational Institutions
Wi-Fi networks are uniquely suited to the needs of educational institutions, enabling cost-effective network access in classrooms, libraries, dormitories, and other facilities where it has never before been affordable. As a result, colleges, universities, and K-12 school districts have been among the earliest and most aggressive adopters of Wi-Fi technology. AMP has been selected by leading institutions such as Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Fairfax County School District, Indiana University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Miami, Stanford University Law School, the University of California Hastings College of Law, and many more.
- Centralized administration to reduce support costs. Educational institutions typically operate with smaller IT staffs than comparably sized corporations. To maintain acceptable performance with a reduced staff, efficient centralized management is critical. AMP's easy-to-use, web-based console and automated diagnostic capabilities empower a small number of administrators to manage even large wireless networks with thousands of access points.
- Real-time, user-based monitoring. University network administrators must know who is connected to their networks and ensure that no individuals are consistently using so much bandwidth that other users' access is adversely affected. Using AMP's web-based interface, all users and devices connected to the school's wireless LAN are fully visible to administrators, who can monitor individual users' signal strength, bandwidth utilization, roaming history, and more.
- Multi-vendor hardware support. School districts and public universities are often required to solicit competitive bids when awarding hardware contracts. Proprietary, single-vendor solutions result in vendor lock-in, which prevents the schools from considering other hardware alternatives in the future. AMP's multi-vendor device support lets administrators select whatever hardware solutions best meet their needs and budgets, both now and in the future.
- Automated RF monitoring and rogue access point detection. Different educational institutions have different policies about whether students and faculty are permitted to connect their own wireless access points to the campus network. Even where this is permitted, however, administrators must be able to detect these Wi-Fi devices to ensure that they are not interfering with the performance of the campus RF network. AMP uses a combination of wireless and wireline scans to detect all wireless access points and to determine when the campus network needs to be reconfigured to minimize interference and optimize performance.
- Complete network control. Schools may need to ensure that the wireless network is not operating at specific times in certain locations, such as in classrooms during final exams. With AMP, administrators can schedule the RF network to automatically shut down during scheduled times.
